WHAT TO EXPECT

At Southwestern Women’s, your care involves a dedicated team of medical professionals who follow a refined process to ensure every patient is treated with warmth and respect in a safe and welcoming space. Let’s review what you can expect when you schedule an appointment at our clinic.

Step 1: Request an Appointment

It all starts when you request an appointment through our website or when you call our office. Together, we will find a date and time that best fits your schedule for an appointment. Patients may opt to complete the required paperwork electronically for their visit in advance to reduce the amount of time spent in the office. If you know you are interested in this option, please be sure to mention this when requesting your appointment.

Step 2: Plan Your Visit

Whether you are a New Mexico resident or will be traveling to us from out of state, we stand ready to help you make arrangements for your care. In most cases, you can expect to complete all the steps of your appointment within 4 to 5 hours based on how far along you are in your pregnancy. For more information about financial assistance for the abortion or for travel, please click here.

Step 3: Confirm Your Appointment

You will receive a courtesy text message in the days before your scheduled appointment to confirm. We understand that plans change, which is why we take this opportunity to ensure everything is still on schedule for your appointment. If not, feel free to reschedule for a better time.

Step 4: Arrive for Your Appointment

Upon entering Southwestern Women’s, you will be greeted by our dedicated staff who will check you in and help you get started with your appointment. If you have not had a chance to complete the paperwork online ahead of your appointment, you will have time to complete it in the clinic.

Step 5: Ultrasound and Lab

You will consult with a registered nurse who specializes in abortion care and pregnancy options services. They will review your medical history with you, perform an ultrasound and do your lab work.

Step 6: Counseling

One of our skilled counselors will meet with you to review your paperwork, explain the procedure and aftercare instructions, answer all of your questions and hold compassionate space for you ahead of your abortion.

Step 7: Meet Your Provider

Prior to the abortion, you will meet privately with your provider to ensure that all your questions have been answered and concerns discussed. The provider will consent you for the services requested and review your medical history with you one last time.

Step 8: Your Abortion and Afterwards

Abortion is one of the safest medical procedures available. Recovery from an abortion varies from person to person but most people are able to resume their daily schedules and activities within a few days. We recommend listening to your body while slowly and mindfully reintroducing your regular activities. Click here to read more about what to expect after your abortion

THEY EXCEEDED MY EXPECTATIONS

This place is wonderful! I was so scared and nervous before coming here, but they exceeded my expectations and made my experience a breeze. The nurses were all so nice and helpful, and I was talked through the whole process by my bedside. The first visit took 1 hour and 15 minutes, and the second visit was 1 hour and 30 minutes, even with me showing up late. They are quick and efficient! This was the hardest decision I’ve ever made in my life, but the staff here made it easy for me. Thank you for the wonderful service!!

MADE ME FEEL 110% SAFE

The staff was very friendly and informative. They made me feel 110% safe and welcomed, and comfortable. They truly do care for their patients and their health and wellness. Would STRONGLY recommend it if you are thinking of having an abortion. The process can be tough and emotional, but the staff and doctors and team make everything super welcome, and they do not judge. On the form, they even ask for your preferred pronouns! They make sure you are comfortable through the whole process. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars!!

WHOLE STAFF HERE IS GREAT

I can not express how amazing this clinic staff was. The staff, nurses, counselors, and doctor were all so nice, non-judgmental, informative, and overall just very calming… I didn’t get a chance to thank the counselor that was in there with me, so Rach, if you read this, thank you so much for the peace you brought me… Robin and Dr. Gilbert, thank you, too, for being so sweet. Really the whole staff here is so great.

THE STAFF DOES AN AMAZING JOB

I’ve been here twice, and each time went so smoothly. The staff does an amazing job of making you comfortable throughout the whole process 🙂 both times, I was surprised at how fast and painless the procedure/aftercare was… I called the clinic several times to ask questions, and they give you a bunch of information about the whole process, so they make it really easy to be informed about any questions you may have…

HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE

I’d give this place 100 stars if I could. Everyone is so nice and reassuring. Abortion is not an easy decision to make, and these women offer constant guidance and reassurance. My nurse Faith was one of the nicest, most understanding people I’ve ever met. The procedure, while uncomfortable, was quick, and they work hard to manage your pain and make sure you’re okay before discharge. If you’re considering abortion, I HIGHLY recommend this place.”\

NOTHING BUT A GOOD EXPERIENCE

I got my procedure done today, and I had nothing but a good experience. The ladies at this facility were very polite & they helped me get through this event. They were kind, understanding & overall professional. Thank you, ladies, for your support!

Media

There are periodically pieces written about Dr. Curtis Boyd and Glenna Halvorson-Boyd, Ph.D. due to their long history working in abortion. Much of the recent media attention on our clinic has been about a program created in collaboration with New Mexico Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice and First Unitarian Church of Dallas helping Texans access abortion care in New Mexico.

Dr. Curtis Boyd: A Lifetime at the Borders of Abortion’s Legality

“Boyd, now 85, provided illegal abortions to patients in the pre-Roe era. Post-Roe, he successfully ran two abortion clinics—one in Dallas and one in Albuquerque, N.M.—devoting much of his career to crossing and re-crossing the Texas-New Mexico border alongside his wife and business partner, Dr. Glenna Halvorson-Boyd, a reproductive rights activist and trainer of abortion counselors.”

Before Roe, A Baptist Preacher Performed Abortions in Secret. Now, He’s Helping Texans.

“Halvorson-Boyd was herself a counselor, and listening to patients day in and out, she soon came to realize, she says, that ‘no one knows what they would do until it’s their pregnancy at that point in their life.’ Whatever their decision, Halvorson-Boyd says, ‘women are moral beings’ who ‘should be the moral agent in their own life.’”
